Vineyards The Pettavel portfolio of wines are produced entirely from estate grown grapes, from our two Geelong vineyards.
Pettavel Winery & Restaurant is surrounded by 35 acres of Shiraz vineyards in Waurn Ponds, where the close proximity to the ocean produces vibrant youthful red berry fruit flavours with abundant spice. The Waurn Ponds vineyard is the source for the Pettavel Evening Star Shiraz. The Strathmore vineyard, established by Mike Fitzpatrick in 1989 now covers 150 acres of vineyards from which, the balance of our wine portfolio is produced.
Despite being only seperated by 25 kilometres, the two vineyards experience vastly different climatic influences. The maritime influence of our Waurn Ponds vineyard: cool evening sea breezes and low night time temperatures, do affect our more continental Strathmore vineyard but to a far lesser degree. As a result the Strathmore vineyard has slightly warmer day time temperatures, producing grapes with richer flavour profiles and riper tannin structures. Warm dry ripening seasons ensure that we are able to fully ripen a wide range of grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, while retaining perfume and elegance, characteristics that are typical each year in our vineyard.
Winery The Pettavel state of the art winery was constructed in 2001 and the 2002 vintage saw the first grapes processed in the winery. The winery has been designed with minimal intervention processing, ensuring that regional and varietal characters are captured and retained in our wines.

Winemaker Peter Flewellyn Pettavel winemaker Peter Flewellyn grew up on a vineyard in the Riverland of South Australia and after studying at Roseworthy College, spent 7 years travelling the wine regions of the world as a flying winemaker for a Bordeaux based negotiant. Working the Northern and Southern Hemisphere vintages each year, with stays in France, Spain, Moldova, South Africa and Argentina, Peter gained a wealth of experience across a broad range of wine varieties, styles and traditional wine making techniques. Returning to Australia in late 2000 to oversee the design, construction and fit-out of the state of the art Pettavel winery, Peter has drawn on his wide ranging experience and worked closely with Pettavel owner and viticulturist Mike Fitzpatrick to create a range of uniquely expressive cool climate wines. |

EVENING STAR Youthful, fruit driven wines, packaged under screw cap. Mr David Pettavel’s efforts in the vineyard and wine cellar were of such success that expansion was constrained only by the shortage of experienced grape growers and winemakers. In order to combat the skilled labour shortage Mr Pettavel returned to Switzerland to recruit family and friends. The ship "Evening Star" docked in Port Philip harbour in 1856 carrying Mr David Pettavel and a cargo of grape growers and winemakers.
Current releases, - 2008 Sauvignon Blanc - 2007 Pinot Noir - 2008 Late Harvest Riesling

Winery Team The modern Pettavel winery was designed to ensure that minimal intervention is required during the wine making process, with the emphasis on retaining the vibrant aromatic characters from vineyard to bottle. The small Pettavel winery team led by winemaker Peter Flewellyn share various roles. Clinton Leech manages daily operations in the winery with Amelia Hildebrand coordinating wine analysis and quality control in the Pettavel laboratory and Kelly Smith manages winery administration and logistic duties.
During vintage each year the full time winery team share cellar duties with seasonal staff during the peak work periods. |
