VINTAGE 2010 May 1st 2010 The grape harvest has concluded, the last remaining bunches of golden sun ripened Riesling have been picked, gently pressed and now slowly ferment in seasoned French oak barrels. With stocks of the 2009 Evening Star Late Harvest Riesling down to the last few cases, the 2010 will be bottled early to supply both domestic and export clients. Once again vintage presented new challenges. The vineyards still recovering from the previous stresses of drought relished the supply of quality water from our desalinisation plant with increased vigour throughout the vineyard. Grape yields however will take another season before they begin to return to pre-ought normality. The low yields with increased vigour resulted in early ripening across all varieties, however heavy rainfalls only days before our first scheduled day of harvest created delays for the Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay vineyards. For the red varieties this rainfall provided much needed resources for the vines and allowed the tannins to further ripen before sugar levels became excessive.
FEBRUARY 25TH 2010 Vintage has begun at Pettavel with some contract Chardonnay the first grapes crushed and pressed on February the 16th. Harvest from our Strathmore vineyard is due to start February the 25th with our Sauvignon Blanc. The warm and dry ripening season of 2010 combined with good rain falls and our new water source has produced healthy canopies throughout the vineyard, however the effects of previous drought years will see low yields again in 2010.
NEW RELEASE WINES 2009 evening star Late Harvest Riesling The drought effected 2009 growing and ripening season produced low yields and vigour in our Riesling vineyard. The late harvest date produced challenges with the extreme heat as the exposed bunches matured quickly in the intense sun. Hand harvesting and sorting in the vineyard ensured that only quality bunches were gently pressed and cool fermented prior to early bottling and release....discover more about the Pettavel portfolio of wines
2007 evening star riesling The warm and dry growing season of 2007 produced ideal growing conditions in our Riesling vineyard. The warm days promoted even ripening while the cool maritime influenced nights retained vibrant perfumed fruit aromas and flavours with crisp natural acid levels. Cool fermented with a neutral yeast strain the 2007 Riesling follows the award winning style of the Evening Star Riesling, rewarding youthful enjoyment with the potential for further cellaring.....discover more about the Pettavel portfolio of wines
